Year 4 – Our visit from a real Viking, Sven Greybeard!
Year Four were lucky enough to have a visit from a real Viking called Sven Greybeard.
We were shown lots of different weapons that the Vikings used and Jack had a lucky escape from a large axe with the help of a very heavy Viking shield. We learnt about the importance of a helmet and their protective layers of clothing as Eddy prepared for battle and used the shield to protect himself from a sword. We couldn’t believe how loud the sword sounded on the shield and couldn’t imagine this in a battle with hundreds of people!
We looked at the Viking alphabet called ‘runes’ and discussed how they could not have curved letters because they would have been carved into stone. We also learnt about the different Viking Gods and Goddesses and the clever design of their longboats.
The children had a fantastic afternoon and start to our Viking topic! They really enjoyed handling and learning about the Viking artefacts and are now really excited to find out more!
