Focus on Wellbeing

Covid 19 has brought uncertainty and anxiety to everyone, including our children. Here at school we are exploring how we can support our children through these difficult times. 

We are practising mindfulness meditation in class. Just one or two minutes practising a breathing meditation to focus on inner calm and developing our children’s awareness of their breath. 

Current research has revealed how mindfulness can sharpen children’s attention and focus as well as offer a strategy for reducing anxiety.

We live in a beautiful part of the country. Lots of recent research suggests that immersing yourself in nature lifts the spirits. Why not spend time outdoors going for a family walk in the woods? Or on the beach or the downs? Or maybe simply visit the park and watch the squirrels chase each other up the trees?

On a sunny day, grab a rug and lie down to watch the clouds float by. Find the shapes and pictures the clouds form and tell each other stories about them. Or why not take advantage of the clear winter skies to go out at night and star gaze, a reminder of our place in the universe and how we are all connected. 

There are lots of mindful colouring pages available in the shops. Why not sit and colour together if the weather is cold and damp?  

Mindful colouring engages the mind to focus on the here and now and not worry about the past or future or any of those niggly worries which often pop into our heads.
